As consumer use and demand for fintech services continues to grow, the fintech ecosystem has developed from being comprised of “scrappy,” upstarts to large, sophisticated companies that provide bank-like services, sometimes at the scale of the largest banks, and, in many cases, are expanding beyond these consumer apps and are providing, among other things, core infrastructure services. Furthermore, the relationships between banks and fintechs have grown increasingly complex, as fintechs have evolved from solely being bank competitors to being service providers for banks as well as significant treasury services customers. Additionally, the growth of fintechs has attracted the attention of regulators, and the increasing relationships between banks and fintechs has implications for the banking regulators’ expectations for these fintechs as well as banks’ management of third-party relationships. This panel convenes leading practitioners from banks, fintechs, and government to consider the various aspects of the increasingly complex relationships between banks and fintechs.
