Sunrises and sunsets can be explained by the rotation of the earth and its revolution around the sun. But in Ancient Egypt, the journey of the sun was said to be Ra traveling in his solar barge, the Mandjet, or the Boat of Millions of Years. The sunset was said to be Ra entering the underworld, bringing light to Duat and facing off against a myriad of demons, including the chaos serpent Apophis. If Ra could not complete his daily journey, the sun would never rise again, and the world would succumb to chaos!
