What is a back door cold front? | Weather Word of the Week

SHUT THE FRONT DOOR! Because back door cold front happens to be this week's weather word.

I'm Storm Shield Meteorologist and a back door cold front is a front that moves east to west rather than the normal west to east movement. For instance, one that enters Southern New England from the Gulf of Maine.

These are most often seen in the Northeast during the Spring and Summer months when an area of high pressure develops over New England or off the coast. Air around this high moves clockwise, pulling in the cool air from the Atlantic and pushing it into the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

These backdoor cold fronts can drop temperatures by 10, 20, or even 30 degrees in a matter of a day or so because of the large temperature difference of the ocean and the land in Spring and even early Summer.

Have you heard a weather word that made you scream obscenities lately? Tell me about it in the comments below, tweet me, or send me a message on the Storm Shield Facebook page. And while you're at it, don't forget to like and subscribe.

Thanks for watching! See you next week!
