Money is the key to efficient exchange of goods. Without money as a universal medium of exchange, economic transactions would be time-consuming and costly. Imagine you want to buy one of Gustav's specialty cakes, but you only have potatoes in your barter repertoire. Gustav, for his part, is interested in cocoa. Before you can exchange potatoes for cocoa, you would have to find someone willing to trade potatoes with you. In a highly specialized economy, such a direct exchange of goods is unthinkable due to the abundance of products and services.
