In 1920s Netherlands, a young and ambitious law graduate named Jacob Willem Katadreuffe finds himself accused of murdering the powerful court officer Dreverhaven—a man who may be his father and lifelong adversary. As he sits in custody, Katadreuffe recounts the painful story of his upbringing: born from a violent encounter, shunned by his silent mother, tormented by society, and relentlessly opposed by the very man who secretly shaped his fate.
