Turkey and Spain are further strengthening cooperation in the defense sector, with a major focus on a potential partnership with Spain’s Airbus regarding the Hurjet advanced jet trainer aircraft, developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries.
On December 20, 2024, Turkey and Spain signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the procurement of 24 Hurjet trainer jets, following the evaluation of the Hurjet demonstration flight by the Spanish Air Force at Torrejón Air Base, Madrid.
According to Infodefensa, Turkey has intensified its contacts with Airbus in Spain for programs such as advanced trainer aircraft for the Spanish Air Force, with Turkish Aerospace Industries’ Hurjet aircraft being the main candidate for these projects.
In mid-March, Airbus Spain President Francisco J. Segura met with a delegation led by Turkish Ambassador to Spain Nuket Kucukel Ezberci to discuss cooperation in the defense industry.
Last week, Chief of the General Staff General Metin Gurak also visited Airbus facilities as part of his official visit to Spain.
