Xenya Genovese, better known as Freak Slug, is a visual artist turned self-taught musician born in Manchester, England, whose music is rooted in raw, authentic self-expression. Influenced by masters of their craft like Ride, Mazzy Star, and Pavement, Freak Slug’s music captures the tension between playful spontaneity and darker introspection. Freak Slug’s 2024 album, 'I Blow Out Big Candles', signals a shift from her lo-fi bedroom pop beginnings to high production indie pop while still embracing the grungy, imperfect edges of her roots. Combining nostalgic ‘90s influences and experimental eccentricity, Freak Slug’s live performance highlights Genovese’s cheeky, poetic storytelling.
