Trump Trying To Cripple Democratic Fundraising With Targeted Investigation
In a recent memo, Donald Trump ordered the Department of Justice to investigate ActBlue, the fundraising apparatus used by the Democratic Party. He claimed in the memo that a recent Congressional investigation revealed that the platform “may” have taken money from foreign countries, even though they were not able to provide hard evidence to back up those claims. Nevertheless, Trump has ordered the targeted investigation to take down his political enemies, as Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins explains.

Last week, Donald Trump issued a memorandum instructing the US Department of Justice to open an investigation into Act Blue and Act Blue. Of course, for those who may not be aware of it, is in fact the fundraising apparatus for the Democratic Party and has been for about 20 years now. It is not necessarily the only way the Democratic Party raises money. It's not the only online platform. However, it is the main platform where the vast majority of donations to the party come from. And Trump told the DOJ investigate them because I think they've been doing some illegal stuff. Now, this story is a hell of a lot deeper than that. Donald Trump believes he has a reason to think that Act Blue is breaking the law, because congressional Republicans conducted a so-called investigation into Act Blue where they said that, Hey, listen, uh, you have like 22 different times where you had foreign people trying to give money, trying being the key word, but the congressional investigation that apparently took place without anybody seeing it happen, which is, you know, kind of odd. But anyway, it happened. The congressional investigation did not accuse the platform of breaking any laws, and it certainly did not even refer them for any kind of criminal prosecution or further investigation.
The investigation by Congress simply said, eh, people tried to give money to you and they weren't allowed to. Oh, and by the way, they also didn't, so no harm, no foul. In fact, act Blue actually flagged those potential donations to make sure they didn't make it into the program. So it like literally didn't happen. And the Congressional Republicans know that. But Donald Trump doesn't care. Act Blue gives money to Democrats. It's how they raise money. Democrats are his political enemies. So of course, let me abuse my power to single out this platform, even though when Red, basically the same thing as Act Blue, except for Republicans has had to do the exact same thing. Like they both have the exact same issue of foreign nationals trying to give money. They flag it and don't accept it. But when red is not being investigated under this memo, oh God no, just act blue. Here is what is being reported. Trump ordered the DOJ to open an investigation into whether online political fundraising platforms that is Act Blue. He named them by name, facilitated contributions by straw donors and foreign donors into the campaign committees of Democratic candidates and party
Organizations. This follows separate investigations by congressional Republicans and state attorneys General alleging that ActBlue had loose anti-fraud measures that helped facilitate potentially fraudulent donations to democratic campaigns and organizations, but did not accuse the platform of violating any laws. Um, in the memo, Trump says, A recent House of Representatives investigation revealed that a platform named ActBlue had in recent years detected at least 22 significant fraud campaigns, nearly half of which had a foreign nexus. So they caught it again, like they, they flagged it. They were like, Hey, uhoh, bad stuff here. Let's not have this happen. But he continues. During a 30 day window, during the 2024 campaign, the platform detected 237 donations from foreign IP addresses using prepaid cars, indicating that this activity remains a pressing concern. They found it. We, we don't need an investigation when the platform itself is like, Hey, we found all these issues and we stopped it. Right? Kind of seems like the problem worked itself out. But again, this is Donald Trump abusing his power and forcing the DOJ to launch this boneheaded idiotic waste of time investigation.
