In this 2-part workshop series, we will be covering rootless chords formation, usage and exercises for mastery.
Rootless chords are those chords that do not have a root as the bottom note. Typically another instrument, like a bass player will supply the root, allowing the piano player to add other notes to their chord voicings like 9ths and 13ths.
By adding these additional notes to their voicings, players found their chords sound bigger and fuller when played with a group.
As a solo piano player (a.k.a. ‘Cocktail’ Piano Player) you too will want rootless chords because a common technique is to use a ‘root-stomp’ approach to add in the root just before the rootless chord. This gives you the benefit of both root motion and fuller, more interesting, sounding chords.
After participating in this workshop, you will know how to form the “big three” rootless chords, learn their usage and how to invert them.
