民芸家具の起源は、柳宗悦氏による「民芸運動」である。各地の風土や手仕事の中から生まれた日常の生活道具の中にこそ健全な美が宿ると、新しい価値観を提唱した。昭和23（1948）年、「松本民芸家具」の創始者である池田三四郎氏は、柳氏の講演に感銘を受け、民芸家具の製作開始を決意。庶民工芸の代表ともいえる椅子作りを筆頭に、現在の製品点数は800種類以上にも及ぶ。故きを温ね、新しきを知り、今日もまた松本民芸家具では、用と美を兼ね揃えた家具を追求する。

Mingei Furniture Shokunin | Matsumoto Mingei Furniture (松本民芸家具, Matsumoto Mingei Kagu)

The origin of “mingei” (folk craft) furniture is the mingei movement that Japanese art critic and philosopher Muneyoshi Yanagi started. He proposed new criteria that value wares that were: made by anonymous craftspeople, produced by hand in quantity, inexpensive, used by the masses, functional in daily life, and representative of their home region.

In 1948 (Showa 23), the founder of “Matsumoto Mingei Furniture,” Sanshiro Ikeda was impressed by Mr. Yanagi’s lecture and determined to crafts mingei furniture. Currently, they can produce more than 800 types of furniture, including chairs—probably a representative of mingei crafts.

By consulting the past to develop new ideas (温故知新), Matsumoto Mingei Furniture continues to pursue crafting furniture that is both useful and beautiful.
