The Boeing B-17 "Flying Fortress" was an American four-engine heavy bomber of World War II, which was primarily responsible for the daytime strategic bombing of Germany from 1942 to 1945.

The B-17 had good flight characteristics and exceptional damage tolerance. It gained media attention and became the first aircraft type that comes to mind when many think of World War II bombers.

When it was completed, the aircraft was a technological leap forward, and its operation required a new kind of expertise. Solutions were developed for the operation of the aircraft that are still widely used in aviation.
