PINATUBO VOLCANO: THE ERUPTION OF THE CENTURY

This was one of the worst volcanic eruptions in history. Watched live by the entire world, from the first tremors to the final explosion.

On June 15, 1991, Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines took the scientific community by surprise. What everyone believed to be a dormant volcano—a mere mountain—erupted with exceptional force. The stratovolcano delivered breathtaking images to the media and volcanologists, who rushed to observe it up close.

Its eruptive column, beyond monumental, soared into the stratosphere. In broad daylight, just like the famous eruption of Vesuvius near Pompeii, its ashfall plunged the country into total darkness. And the devastation was staggering: 850 dead, 8,000 homes destroyed, and 300,000 people directly impacted.

The awakening of this giant volcano had global consequences. Its ash acted like a sunshield, lowering the Earth's temperature by 0.5 degrees.
