This is what I believe to be Schubert's tempo for this Impromptu. I have come to this conclusion based on many years of research into Bach's tempos. This tempo I play (108 bpm, for both sections) was what Bach would have considered "Presto", which shows that the turn into the 19th century pushed tempos ever faster. We are so used to hearing this Impromptu played as fast as possible by everyone, that we have lost perspective on what "Allegretto" really was in the 1820s. Most pianists play this Impromptu as fast as possible, but this is not what "Allegretto" means. Also, the advantage of playing 108 bpm is that is also works perfectly for the expressive middle section.
