Keep Lexington Clean by Keeping Grass Clippings Away from the Street

How our community approaches lawn care affects our health and the environment. Why? When stormwater runoff flows into our storm drains, streams and lakes, that water gets polluted by chemicals and nutrients. This contamination can cause health problems such as cyanobacteria (algal) blooms and E. coli.

Through the "Raise the Blade" campaign, homeowners, businesses, and municipalities are encouraged to follow three simple lawn care practices that help reduce stormwater runoff:

Allow grass clippings to decompose in place, as opposed to blowing them into the street

Mow grass no shorter than 3 inches.

Cut only about one-third of the height of the grass at each mowing.
