A counterpoint to the Palace of Versailles, the building is stepless and surrounded by exotic flowers. Neglected, the Trianon once again becomes the intimate den of power under Napoleon. The Emperor tried to forget the sadness of his separation from Joséphine, and proved to be a maniac, furnishing the place in the same way as his other residences and demanding washbasins. The Trianon also appealed to General de Gaulle. His presence is still palpable: his bedroom - two disproportionately long separate beds - has been left as it was. He gave the Trianon a second lease of life, transforming it into a residence for foreign heads of state and sovereigns. More than 300 craftsmen and workers stripped the place down to its bare bones, and equipped it with all modern comforts: air conditioning, electricity and state-of-the-art kitchens. JFK and Jackie Kennedy, as well as the Queen of England and the Duke of Edinburgh, were received with great pomp.
