The Kwan Um School of Zen is an international organization existing throughout the world, with over 40 temples, monasteries, centers and groups in Europe alone. Its roots go back to Korea, where its founding teacher, Zen Master Seung Sahn, was born, became a monk, attained enlightenment and received the authority to teach as 79th patriarch of Korean buddhism.

Soya sunim was born in Russia and began practicing with local Zen and kung-fu teachers in 2000. in 2005 she met Zen Master Sandon Kaisen, student of the Soto Zen Master Taisen Deshimaru. In 2006 she took nuns precepts and became head disciple of the Russian sangha of Master Kaisen. In 2009 she met Zen Master Wu Bong, and in 2012 sat winter kyol che with him at Beop Hwa Do Ryang. In 2015, after dividing time between Korea and the Soto Tradition, she came to Musangsa and began haengja training for 6 months, with a further 6 months training at Beop Hwa Do Ryang. In the spring of 2016 she joined the sami/samini training program at Musangsa.
