"Quatuor à cordes No. 2" (String Quartet No. 2) was composed under the commission of Nippon Broadcasting System in Autumn 1967 and was premiered by Mari Iwamoto, Toshio Kuronuma and others.
The whole is cosisted of 3 movements, which are fast - slow - fast, and the format is clearer than the first string quartet.
The 1st movement is the sonata form. Energetic music develops at a fast tempo of quarter note = 132. First, the first violin plays the "theme" including the augmented and the diminished 8th at the beginning, and the work begins with the diminished 8th sound of the second violin and viola. This basic pitch is thoroughly implemented along with other derivative pitches through the presentation section, the development section, the reproduction section, and the coda.
The 2nd movement is the compound ternary form. In contrast to the rapid and energetic sound movement of 1st mov., this is the slow movement, which was extremely delicate. The tone color changes subtly against the background of the piano. Throughout the movement, suppressed lyricism and a latent song is playing from beginning to end.
The 3rd movement begins quietly with a muted cello solo playing, but the music gradually tides, and at the center of this movement, each voice sprinkles a variety of tones according to its own pulse. This climax effect is amazing. The string that attached a mute again plays a expressive song and the work quietly closes.

　『弦楽四重奏曲第2番』は、1967年秋ニッポン放送の委嘱で作曲され、巌本真理、黒沼俊夫他のメンバーによって放送初演された。
　全体は急＝緩＝急という3楽章からなり、形式は弦楽四重奏曲第1番よりも明瞭なものとなっている。
　第1楽章はソナタ形式。四分音符=132という速いテンポで、エネルギッシュに音楽が展開される。まず第1ヴァイオリンが曲頭で増減8度の音程を含む「主題」を奏し、それに第2ヴァイオリンとヴィオラの減8度の響きがかさなって曲は開始される。この基本音程が、提示部、展開部、再現部、コーダ、の各セクションを通して、他の派生的な音程とともに徹底される。
　第2楽章は複合3部形式。第1楽章の急速なエネルギッシュな音の運動と対照的に、繊細をきわめた緩徐楽章。弱奏を背景に、音色が微妙に変化していく。この楽章全体に、抑制された抒情と終始潜在的な歌が流れる。
　第3楽章は、弱音器をつけたチェロのソロで静かに開始されるが、音楽はしだいに高潮し、この楽章の中心部では、各声部が独自の拍節にしたがって多彩な音色をまきちらす。このクライマックスの効果はみごとである。弱音器をふたたびつけた弦により、表情豊かな歌が奏され、静かに曲を閉じる。
