Interactive Writing in Kindergarten: Writing about Reading
Interactive writing is a great component in balanced literacy where students receive a high level of support that enables them to look closely at letters, sounds, and words. They are using everything they've learned in the foundational skills, to then make meaning of it, and compose a piece of writing together. The students that helped compose the piece were strategically chosen based on their Words Their Way data. It is very important to use the resources around the room such as; an alphabet chart, word wall, student name list, etc. where you are modeling good habits of making meaning with everything around you.
Since we are at the end of the year, our interactive writing should also reflect the students' data at the end of the year. I decided to focus on our shared reading book (found in Benchmark) discussing characters and character traits. With prompting and support, I was able to guide the students to understand the actions portrayed by the characters determined what kind of person they were.
The students shown in the video have great stamina and were excited to 'interact' with the piece.
